Here at IFA 2019, as expected, Huawei have revealed their 7nm EUV Kirin 990 5G chipset with a built-in 5G modem, which they say is the world’s first flagship 5G System-on-Chip (SoC) supporting an NSA/SA dual-network over the TDD/FDD spectrum, a 2.3Gbps 5G download speed and upload speed of 1.25Gbps. Using overlay LTE download speeds can reach 3.3Gbps while upload speed reaches 1.32Gbps. According to them, it also has the world’s first Big-Tiny Core Architecture NPU and 16-Core Mali-G76 GPU while maintaining the same size as the Kirin 980.

Pushing their innovation agenda, Huawei introduced a Smart Uplink Split with the Kirin 990 5G. This helps to overcome weak 5G signals up to 5.8 times and it works well even at speeds of 120Km/h. On the NPU AI front, the chipset is based on Da Vinci architecture which is said to be the industry’s strongest AI with Big-Tiny Core architecture for better energy efficiency. The Kirin 990 5G NPU uses 2 large cores and 1 micro core while the Kirin 990 Standard Edition NPU uses 1 large core and 1 micro core.

The Kirin 990 is Huawei’s most powerful CPU chipset yet and uses 2 Big Cores (using 2.86Ghz Cortex A76 cores), 2 Middle Cores (using 2.36Ghz cores) and 4 Little Cores (using 1.95Ghz A55 cores). As an example of this power, Huawei showed off Real-time video multi-instance segmentation rendering multiple portraits, objects and video streams while instantly changing the background.

Other technologies used in the Kirin 990 includes the new Kirin ISP 5.0 which offers the world’s first mobile phone BM3D professional image denoising tech and the first dual-domain joint video noise reduction tech so we can probably expect images and videos with a lot less noise in devices using the Kirin 990. Memory-wise, the chipset supports LPDDR4X and UFS 3.0, while the Smart Cache has been redesigned for high-load gaming, reducing memory power consumption by 20%.

No Malaysia release dates or pricing details for the Huawei Kirin 990 but it has been confirmed to be used in the Huawei Mate 30 series which is set for release on 19 September 2019 in Munich, Germany. No other tech specs or features for the Mate 30 series were mentioned but with the Kirin 990 announcement, the Mate 30 series are shaping up to be something really interesting to behold.

We'll likely be there to check it out but what do you think? Let us know on our Facebook page and stay tuned to TechNave.com.
