Huawei has officially revealed the Huawei Pura X Max, marking a major shift in foldable smartphone design by introducing a wide-format foldable instead of the tall, narrow form factor seen in most current devices.

According to reports, the device represents one of the first modern attempts at a horizontally wide foldable, positioning Huawei ahead of competitors like Samsung and Apple in what could become the next evolution of foldable smartphones.

A Wider Approach to Foldables

The Huawei Pura X Max features a noticeably different design philosophy. Instead of unfolding into a tall tablet-like display, the device opens into a wider, more compact tablet shape that is better suited for landscape use cases such as video playback, multitasking, and gaming.

Early information suggests the foldable will feature a 7.69-inch internal display paired with a 5.5-inch outer screen, aligning closely with emerging industry trends towards wider foldable formats. This shift could address long-standing usability concerns with traditional foldables, particularly around app scaling and one-handed usability when folded.

Display and Design Highlights

The inner display is expected to feature a WQHD+ resolution and a 16:10 aspect ratio, offering a more balanced viewing experience compared to the narrow ratios found in current foldables. Visually, the device adopts a short and wide footprint with a triple-camera setup at the rear. Early renders also suggest a minimal crease along the folding area, indicating continued improvements in hinge and display durability.

Performance and Hardware Expectations

While full specifications have yet to be confirmed, leaks point to Huawei equipping the Pura X Max with its in-house Kirin 9030 chipset, which is expected to deliver improved performance and efficiency over previous generations. Camera capabilities are also expected to be a major focus, with reports suggesting a telephoto-enabled system as part of Huawei’s advanced imaging setup, continuing the brand’s strong emphasis on mobile photography. Battery capacity could see a significant increase as well, potentially reaching up to 6000mAh, although this remains unconfirmed at this stage.

Beating Apple and Samsung to the Punch

One of the most notable aspects of the Pura X Max is its timing. With both Samsung and Apple rumoured to be developing similar wide foldable devices, Huawei’s early reveal positions it as a first mover in this emerging category.

Huawei has already opened pre-orders for the Pura X Max in China, although details on global availability and pricing remain unclear. For markets like Malaysia, availability may depend on Huawei’s broader rollout strategy, especially given ongoing ecosystem considerations such as software support and app compatibility.
