Today, Huawei has officially launched its new AI Lab and Innovation Centre in Kuala Lumpur, marking a significant step in expanding its artificial intelligence and digital ecosystem efforts in Malaysia. The facility, located at The Exchange 106, is designed to serve not just Malaysia but the wider Asia Pacific region.

The launch event on 27 April 2026 was attended by Anwar Ibrahim, alongside key government officials and industry stakeholders, highlighting the national importance of AI development and digital transformation.

A Regional Hub for AI Innovation and Collaboration

Spanning over 13000 square feet, the new centre is positioned as a collaborative platform for industry players, researchers, and educators. It will showcase Huawei’s latest AI-driven solutions and real-world use cases across sectors such as government services, education, and energy.

The facility is also designed to strengthen collaboration between enterprises and ecosystem partners, while enabling closer engagement between industry, research institutions, and academia. A key focus is on nurturing local AI talent, aligning with Malaysia’s broader ambition to become a regional AI talent hub.

Supporting Malaysia’s Digital and AI Ambitions

Huawei says the initiative aligns with national frameworks such as the Thirteenth Malaysia Plan and the MADANI agenda, with a focus on accelerating digital, AI, and green transformation. The company aims to enhance connectivity and computing ecosystems, supporting broader adoption of AI technologies across industries.

Local telcos are also expected to benefit, as Huawei continues working with Malaysian operators to improve 5G and broadband experiences, while addressing connectivity gaps in rural areas. The company also highlighted its role in enabling green energy solutions and supporting Malaysia’s ambitions to become a regional data centre hub.

25 Years in Malaysia With Strong Local Impact

The launch coincides with Huawei’s 25th anniversary in Malaysia, underscoring its long-standing presence in the market. Since entering the country in 2001, the company has grown to nearly 4000 employees locally, with a localisation rate exceeding 80%.

Huawei claims its technologies now serve a large majority of the Malaysian population, working closely with telecom operators to support infrastructure from 2G through to 5G. It also noted its involvement in next-generation 5G deployments, including support for U Mobile’s second 5G network.

Expanding Talent Development and Ecosystem Growth

Talent development remains a major pillar of Huawei’s strategy. The company says it has trained over 72000 ICT professionals in Malaysia over the past five years through initiatives such as the Huawei ASEAN Academy and collaborations with local institutions.

The broader ecosystem has also grown, with more than 80 partners working alongside Huawei on industrial digitalisation and AI adoption. The company plans to further expand these collaborations while leveraging its open platforms to accelerate local innovation.

Consumer Tech and AI-Driven Experiences

On the consumer front, Huawei continues to push its “Seamless AI Life” ecosystem across smartphones, tablets, wearables, and audio products. The company also used the event to showcase new technologies, including advancements in health-focused wearables such as the Watch FIT 5 series, which introduces new capabilities like diabetes risk assessment.

Looking ahead, Huawei says it will continue investing in AI-driven innovation to enhance everyday experiences while supporting Malaysia’s broader transition into a digital and low-carbon economy.
