It has been a year since the nova Flip was released in China. Today, Huawei revealed the nova Flip S, the latest contender in the premium foldable phone market. The device bridges high-end performance with everyday practicality, marking a bold bid to strengthen Huawei’s presence in the foldable sector as competition intensifies from rivals.

The Flexible Design

The nova Flip S arrives in a stylish clamshell design that blends elegance with portability. It measures just 6.9 mm when open and 15.08 mm when folded for the leather variant, or 6.9 mm and 15.12 mm respectively for the glass model. Weighing around 195 g for the leather version and 199 g for the glass, it remains one of the lightest foldables in its class.

The main internal display is a 6.94-inch OLED panel featuring a 1-120 Hz LTPO adaptive refresh rate, 1440 Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, and full P3 colour gamut support. The screen also offers a 300Hz touch sampling rate for ultra-responsive control and a vibrant HDR experience ideal for gaming and multimedia. Complementing it is a 2.14-inch external OLED screen for notifications and quick interactions, offering added convenience when folded.

Hardware and Software

In terms of tech specs, the chipset was not specified, but the nova Flip S runs on Huawei’s HarmonyOS 5.1, which brings enhanced AI capabilities, smoother transitions, and deep integration with Huawei’s ecosystem. Storage configurations include 256GB and 512GB options.

Photography is one of the nova Flip S’s strongest assets. On the rear, the phone carries a 50MP main camera with an f/1.9 aperture and an 8MP ultra-wide camera with an f/2.2 aperture. It supports up to 10× digital zoom and records 4K video with advanced AIS stabilisation.

The front camera features a 32MP sensor optimised for selfies and vlogging, complete with AI portrait enhancements and 4K video recording. Huawei has also included a variety of creative modes, such as motion portraits, sound-activated capture, and delay timers to empower social media creators.

The nova Flip S packs a 4400 mAh battery with support for 66W Huawei SuperCharge. The phone can fully recharge in under an hour, ensuring minimal downtime for users on the go. Intelligent power management dynamically allocates energy to maximise efficiency and battery health across daily tasks.

Connectivity and Other Features

Connectivity-wise, the nova Flip S offers Wi-Fi 6/6E support with dual-band 2×2 MIMO, ensuring strong and stable network performance. It also includes Bluetooth 5.2 with LDAC and L2HC high-fidelity audio codecs, providing premium wireless audio quality.

Additionally, the phone supports NFC with Huawei Wallet features for contactless payments. A suite of sensors—including fingerprint, gravity, gyroscope, compass, ambient light, and proximity sensors—enhances functionality across different scenarios.

Smart Additions and Value Features

AI plays a major role in the nova Flip S experience. The phone offers AI-powered camera modes, including night, macro, portrait, panorama, and professional settings. HarmonyOS integration allows seamless handoff between Huawei devices such as tablets, laptops, and wearables, creating a unified ecosystem. The foldable hinge mechanism is designed for durability, withstanding thousands of folds without compromising reliability.

The nova Flip S comes in six different colour options, but strangely, it does not mention any RAM figures (only 256GB and 512GB). The starting price is 3488 Yuan (~RM2K), and it may not come to Malaysia, since the predecessor never did last year.
