Huawei patents a ‘holeless’ display smartphone that may use next-gen under-display cameras

Huawei seems to be working on perfecting its under-display camera technology as a recent device patent application by the Chinese tech giants reveals a smartphone display without a cutout. Furthermore, the patent doesn’t show a pop-up camera mechanism either, which could only mean that it would utilise an under-display camera.

As reported by IT Home who shared screenshots of the patent application, there are no openings on the smartphone’s display like many other modern smartphones. Moreover, the front side of the smartphone seems to be all screen with a display that curves to the devices's sides and thin top and bottom bezels.

A further examination of the patent application shows that it was filed by Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd and not much information can be extracted from its abstract. However, the lack of a front camera cutout and a mechanism for pop-up cameras makes the patent rather intriguing.

Essentially, the only possible explanation is that the phone has no front-facing cameras at all or utilises under-display cameras. The latter seems more plausible, don’t you think?

Besides that, the patent also shows the smartphone having a rather peculiar oval shaped camera module at its rear. Unfortunately, the patent doesn’t show a lot of detail about the rear camera setup other then it would slightly protrude outwards, essentially creating a camera bump.

Huawei has already released a full-screen smartphone  in the past, the first being the Enjoy 10 Plus back in 2019. However, that particular device uses a pop-up camera to achieve an all-screen front.
