As Huawei unveiled the new Mate 70 Series yesterday, the company also made another important announcement. These new Huawei devices will be the first to switch to HarmonyOS Next in 2025, breaking away from Android's framework build.
That's right; Huawei is going to break up with Android next year. That means HarmonyOS Next will not support any Android apps in the future which sounds like a bad move on paper. However, Huawei told the media that it has been working with many developers on that. So far, around 10,000 apps are already compatible with HarmonyOS Next. The company's goal is to reach 100,000 apps within a few months.
The new Mate 70 series and Mate X6 will launch with HarmonyOS 4.3 first, though. When HarmonyOS Next rolls out, users will have the option to switch to it. As for future Huawei devices, Huawei will launch all of them with HarmonyOS Next as the default operating system by 2025.
For the time being, it's unclear how Huawei Chinese fans would react to this upcoming change. It's certainly a big jump from Android but Huawei mentioned that HarmonyOS Next can offer a new user experience like never before. We will need to see how it all plays out.
