According to The Guardian, TikTok has confirmed that thousands of employees in Southeast Asia and the United Kingdom have been laid off as their jobs are being taken over by artificial intelligence (AI). So, what should you know about it?
Bad news for TikTok staffs regardless of region
For your information, 2400 content moderation staff in the UK were laid off. The number of staff laid off in Southeast Asia is still unknown, as there is no law requiring it to be reported to the labour department.
Additionally, 85% of content that violates the site's terms is identified by AI before being removed, making human staff unnecessary.
Unfortunately, this is bad news for TikTok's content moderation staff, as late last year, 500 were dismissed, with 481 of them in Malaysia.
Moreover, the use of AI in place of humans is also worrisome, as TikTok now labels pro-Palestinian content that refers to the Israeli military (IDF) as terrorists and will be automatically deleted.
Furthermore, the recent appointment of a former IDF soldier as the IDF's content manager has received worldwide protests, including from Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
