IEC Telecom Group has officially opened its office in Malaysia, marking a strategic expansion of its enterprise connectivity services in the Southeast Asia region. That said, what should you know about it?

The company is aiming for users in rural and remote areas

For your information, by introducing Starlink satellite internet technology to the local market, the company is targeting businesses and communities facing connectivity constraints, particularly in remote and rural areas with low conventional network penetration, as well as the maritime sector that requires consistent satcom solutions to ensure the continuity of daily operations.

Additionally, this initiative comes in line with Malaysia’s efforts to realise its national digital targets. By the end of 2025, internet coverage in populated areas will reach 99.71%, a significant increase from 91.8% before the implementation of the National Digital Connectivity Plan (JENDELA). While this progress is commendable, the internet access gap is still significant in rural areas, especially in East Malaysia.

Moreover, government statistics show that 5G coverage as of mid-2025 is 63.8% in Sarawak and 68.6% in Sabah, indicating that there is still significant room for expansion. For rural schools, fishing communities and businesses operating far from urban centres, stable and consistent internet connectivity remains elusive.
