In an effort to improve the services of the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM), immigration officers at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 counters are not allowed to use mobile phones while on duty. So, what should you know about it?
It is one of the suggested improvements to prevent the officers involved from being easily contacted by agents and syndicates to ensure that the ' counter setting ' syndicate that brings in foreigners through the 'special counter route' does not repeat itself. Said Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Tan Sri Azam Baki.
According to the MACC Commissioner, the ' counter setting ' syndicate occurred as a result of weaknesses in the internal control aspect when on duty which caused immigration officers to be easily approached by agents and syndicates as well as unsystematic workplace rotation.
Moreover, the officer on duty also said that he was too comfortable and had been working at the same location for a long time. MACC also suggested that the appointment schedule for officers at the counter should be made when the officer enters duty and is already in the counter zone, in addition to having to be made by another party.
He added that there was no third-party monitoring and screening involving the review of documents including return tickets and accommodation throughout the period in Malaysia, as well as the generous bribes that also caused duty officers to be involved in the syndicate.
