The Australian Senate passed a bill banning all individuals under the age of 16 from using social media sites yesterday. According to Reuters, the bill will now be presented in the Senate today after passing the House of Representatives only yesterday with the support of the government and the opposition. So, what should you know about it?
For your information, the bill will come into force a year from now and Australia will become the world's most restrictive social media ban for teenagers. Use is still prohibited even if they have the permission of a parent or guardian. Social media platforms that allow underage users can be fined AUD 50 million (~RM 144 million) if they fail to introduce an age verification system.
In addition, a period of one year is given to allow social media platform operators to prepare. The system of using an identification card with a biometric scan is among those that will be tested to see if it can be used or not. Representatives of technology companies have already commented that they need more time to introduce the age verification system and asked the government to refine it to avoid any confusion.
Moreover, TikTok has already said it will introduce an AI identity verification system and prevent facial beautification filters for users under 18. Is banning the use of social media something justified? Is it true that social media is like alcohol and tobacco products that can only be given to adults? Either way, it will be interesting to see if Malaysia will follow this step.
