Indonesia’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arif Havas Oegroseno, has called for young programmers in Malaysia and Indonesia to develop a Nusantara-style system similar to China’s open-source artificial intelligence (AI) platform, DeepSeek. Arif, who is currently on a working visit in Malaysia, said technology experts from both countries should explore the possibility, as DeepSeek is open source.

According to Bernama, the Indonesia Vice Minister said that the ‘Nusantara-style’ AI model would not amount to stealing anyone’s technology, as there are no legal boundaries to develop a system like that. He added that if China can develop DeepSeek, Indonesia and Malaysia should be able to do it too as it’s open source.

Besides that, Arif also asserted that Indonesia and Malaysia must collaborate in the digital world, as ASEAN’s digital economy is now valued at USD260 billion. He further envisioned that in 2030, ASEAN is looking at USD trillions in the digital economy.
