On January 23, 2025, Samsung hosted the Galaxy Tech Forum in San Jose, California, following the Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event. The forum focused on Samsung's innovations in artificial intelligence (AI) and their potential to tackle key global challenges. Over 100 media representatives and industry professionals gathered at Blanco in the heart of Silicon Valley. Discussions were organised into four sessions: Sustainability, Health AI, Galaxy AI, and Home AI, each highlighting the transformative impact of AI in its respective fields.

A key highlight was the Sustainability session, where Samsung unveiled its commitment to fostering sustainable practices through innovative technology and strategic partnerships. The company emphasised how its mobile devices, including the newly launched Galaxy S25 series, are designed with sustainability at their core.

Driving Sustainability Through Innovation

During the forum, Daniel Araujo, Head of Sustainability Management at Samsung's Mobile eXperience Business, outlined how Samsung integrates sustainability across its product lifecycle. He announced that each Galaxy S25 device will feature at least 50% recycled cobalt, with the S25 model's battery being made from recycled cobalt sourced from previously used Galaxy devices.

Samsung's sustainability efforts extend beyond its devices. Since 2022, the company has recycled over 150 tonnes of discarded fishing nets into its products. These efforts have been paired with marine conservation initiatives, such as its collaboration with Seatrees and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Together, they aim to combat the impact of ocean-bound plastic on coral reefs.

Michael Stewart, co-founder of Seatrees, and Dr Stuart Sandin from the Scripps Institution highlighted the urgent need for coral reef restoration. They introduced Samsung's "Ocean Mode", a feature on the Galaxy S24 Ultra that enhances underwater photography. This feature enables the collection of high-quality visual data to create 3D maps of coral reefs, aiding in restoration efforts.

Empowering Future Generations

Samsung's sustainability mission also includes empowering young leaders. Through its partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the company launched initiatives like the Samsung Global Goals app and the Generation17 program. These efforts aim to inspire and support the next generation of changemakers. Tamara Gondo, a Generation17 Young Leader, shared her experiences of leveraging Samsung's platform to grow her social enterprise, Liberty Society, which helps upskill marginalised women.
