Instagram Reels adds new features in anticipation of "TikTok refugees"

Due to the impending TikTok ban on 19 January 2025, other social media platforms will gain plenty of new users. Already some users have moved to other Chinese apps as a form of protest and other social media platforms like Instagram could benefit.

According to TechCrunch, Instagram Reels has introduced two new features. The first makes it easier for new users to find content that friends and followers like. Instagram Reels users should now see a small button on the top right with the profile pictures of friends and followers who have watched the content. There will also be other icons like heart icons or conversation bubbles, to indicate whether they've liked or replied to the content.

The other feature was designed to "encourage users to start conversations about Reels content". Specifically, a reply bar will now be available at the bottom of a Reel. This bar can 'prompt' you to respond to a friend or follower's engagement with a Reel. For example, when a profile pic of a friend floats across the screen, you can send them a DM to discuss the content.

These new features sound more suited for active social media users, so it's probably pointless for people (like me) who quietly lurk and enjoy the content we like. But what do you think, are these features enough to lure US "TikTok refugees"? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page, and stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
