Instagram bans influencers from vaping and smoking

It seems like Facebook is trying to bring a more positive vibe to its photo-centric social media platform Instagram. Earlier, we’ve heard the platform is attempted to hide the likes of the posts, which is to promote the idea of focusing more on content rather than like counts. Now, it is trying to keep the social media platform clean by banning the influencers to promote vaping and smoking.

Other than sharing content, Instagram is also a place for brands to advertise through the fame of influencers. The company has even rolled out a feature called ‘branded content ads’ that allows brands to turn influencers’ sponsored content posts into ads to reach a bigger audience.

The move of banning advertisements for vaping, tobacco and weapons on the platform has long been implemented. Facebook only announced they will enforce the ban in the coming weeks on 18 December 2019. Therefore, we might not be able to see those cool pictures of influencers vaping with branded e-cigarretes anymore.

Other than that, there are also restrictions for branded alcohol and diet supplements that are promoted by the influencers. However, we really don’t see any changes as the advertised posts of those products are still popping up on my feed from various brands.

Influencers are the ones who have the most power on this social media platform. Many have created images that are deemed perfect, which has led to the blind pursue of the followers. Therefore, it is clear why Instagram is putting a stop to the advertisements of such products. Let us know what you think about this ban on our Facebook page!
