Instagram is rolling out enhanced safety features for teens in Malaysia, introducing an updated 13+ content rating system alongside a new Limited Content setting aimed at providing stronger parental controls.

The update means users under 18 will now be automatically placed into a stricter, age-appropriate content environment by default. Teens will not be able to opt out of these protections without parental permission, reinforcing safeguards at the account level.

Content Experience Now Aligned with 13+ Movie Ratings

The updated system is designed to mirror the experience of watching a movie rated for ages 13 and above. This means teens may occasionally encounter mild suggestive themes or strong language, but Instagram says such instances will be kept to a minimum.

The platform has refined its content policies to better align with familiar movie rating standards, making it easier for parents to understand what their teens are exposed to. Existing restrictions already block or limit sexually suggestive material, graphic imagery, and adult-related content such as tobacco or alcohol promotions. The updated guidelines go further by reducing exposure to strong language, risky stunts, and content that could encourage harmful behaviour.

Stronger Protections Across Accounts, Search, and Content

Instagram is also expanding how it enforces these protections across the platform using improved detection systems. For accounts, teens will no longer be able to follow or interact with profiles that frequently share age-inappropriate content. These accounts will also be restricted from contacting teens or appearing in recommendations and search results.

Search functionality is being tightened as well. In addition to existing blocks on sensitive topics like self-harm, teens will now be restricted from viewing results for a broader range of mature terms, including alcohol and violent content, even when misspelt. Content visibility is also being limited across Explore, Reels, Feed, and Stories. Even if shared by someone a teen follows, content that violates updated guidelines will be hidden. Links to such content sent via direct messages will also be inaccessible.

AI Responses Also Updated for Teen Safety

Instagram is extending these safeguards to its AI-powered features. Responses generated for teen users will now follow the same 13+ standard, ensuring that AI interactions remain age-appropriate and aligned with the updated content guidelines. This reflects a growing focus on moderating not just user-generated content, but also AI-driven experiences within social platforms.

New ‘Limited Content’ Setting Offers Extra Control

For parents who prefer stricter controls, Instagram is introducing a new Limited Content setting. This option further reduces exposure to sensitive content beyond the default 13+ level. Under this setting, teens will also face additional restrictions on comments, including limitations on viewing, leaving, or receiving comments on posts.

Gradual Rollout Across Malaysia

The updated teen safety features are currently being rolled out to users in Malaysia and are expected to reach full availability in the coming months. By combining stricter default settings, improved AI moderation, and additional parental controls, Instagram is aiming to create a safer and more age-appropriate environment for teens in Malaysia.
