Instagram is testing a Dislike button just for comments

For years, likes and dislikes have been popular metrics for social media platforms. Plenty of platforms use them, mostly for the content itself. However, YouTube lets you like or dislike individual comments, which is a feature Instagram now wants to try.

Yesterday, Instagram boss Adam Mosseri confirmed that the platform is testing a new dislike button for comments. It will allow users to express dislike for a comment, without revealing any usernames or providing a dislike counter. Doing so allegedly lowers the 'rank' of a comment, causing it to appear farther down a comments thread.

As explained, a 'dislike' button isn't anything new. Even Reddit has it in the form of the downvoting feature. Unfortunately, this dislike button may not be a popular move. In the post's comments responding to Mosseri, some users said the move was an "excuse to censor" and "silence the masses".

What do you think of the idea? Is it something you'd appreciate or would you see it as censoring speech? Share your thoughts in the comments and stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
