Instagram now allows users to download their own Reels

Finally, Instagram will allow users to download Reels in the app. The announcement was made by Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri on his Instagram broadcast channel. However, this feature is only available in the US for now.

Are there any limits on downloading Reels? Well, the CEO mentioned that only public accounts are eligible for it. On top of that, users with a public account can turn the feature off should they prefer that way. Downloaded Reels will also have an Instagram logo and the account name embedded. This is pretty similar to TikTok if we are being honest.

In case you didn't know, TikTok has always allowed users to download their own videos. Downloaded TikTok videos will also leave a watermark and the account name, and people would simply upload them to other platforms such as Reels and YouTube Shorts.

That said, Instagram stopped promoting Reels with a TikTok watermark back in 2021 and YouTube started its own Shorts logo on downloaded videos on its own channel. Despite the intention to discourage that, it's believed that many users still do that due to convenience.
