Intel officially announces Thunderbolt 4, expected to be released this year

Today, Intel have announced a new Thunderbolt 4 as the next-gen universal cable. For those who are new to this, the Thunderbolt series is generally known for delivering fast transfer speeds with the most minimum performance requirements.

To truly understand how the new Thunderbolt 4 will make an impact on the PC industry, here's what we know it can do. Compared with the predecessor, the Thunderbolt 4's minimum video and data requirements are twice as much being able to support two 4K monitors (or one 8K monitor), as well as transferring data with a speed up to 3000 MBps on a PCIe at 32Gbps. Moreover, it can support docks with up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports and many more.

According to Intel's website, the Thunderbolt 4 will make its first appearance on Intel's upcoming mobile PC processor (Tiger Lake) and laptops based on "Project Athena". The company is also expected to introduce a new Thunderbolt 4 controller 8000 series - the JHL8440 device controller for accessory makers, as well as the JHL8540 and JHL8340 host controllers for computer makers.
