What would you do if you had an idea for a device but couldn't find it being sold anywhere? While you could try and prototype it or make it, previously it wasn't easy to put together a working computer platform designed specifically for those who like to tinker and make things. However, in this day and age, those who make things or 'Makers' now have access to system-on-chip boards and platforms designed to be modular for easy attachment of sensors and servos. The maker movement in Malaysia is quickly picking up steam, with more makers of every age appearing with bright ideas about devices you cannot find on the shelf but are nonetheless useful. The Intel Galileo board is Intel's solution for Makers and we were privilaged enough to get our hands-on with an Intel Galileo set which you can see in the video below:
While it isn't as readily available in your average computer store here in Malaysia, the Intel Galileo board can be found online for around RM350 or so but you will also need sensors and various other parts to make it do more. Intel have a thriving communities page for those interested in starting out with Intel Galileo as well as various activities aimed at reaching out to budding Makers here in Malaysia. The Intel Galileo board and other Intel maker technologies like Edison and Curie are expected to help push the development for the Internet of Things (IoT) where everything is eventually connected. While we don't have any specific dates, the next Intel Maker's event is expected sometime in October 2015. Here's what Intel have to say about "making" with the Intel Galileo platform:
We encourage everyone to continue making what they love and be part of the maker community to share, learn and network with other makers. Apart from compatibility with the Arduino platform and the performance with Linux OS, we help you to achieve your goals with our Community Page that offers online help to get you started, speed your development and the tools to go big with IoT with our IoT development Kit. We believe If It Computes and Connects, It's Best with Intel. Kanapathy Murugayah, Platform Solution Architect, Intel Malaysia and Ng Hoon Leng, Platform Application Engineer, Intel Malaysia
