Andy Rubin, the creator of Android has come up with another potential masterpiece. His take on a true personal flagship, no strings attached or bloatware, the Essential Phone.

The Essential Phone is Andy’s idea on what the Android phone of the future should look like based on his philosophies:

  • Devices are your personal property. We won’t force you to have anything on them you don’t want to have.
  • We will always play well with others. Closed ecosystems are divisive and outdated.
  • Devices shouldn’t become outdated every year. They should evolve with you.

A true bezel-less 5.71-inch LTPS LCD Quad-HD display that upstages even Samsung’s infinity display, the phone also features a legendary titanium edge that will not bend or scratch like aluminium on top of a full solid ceramic back. Specifications-wise, the phone is very atypical to that of a premium flagship that we have seen time and time again which can be referred by the following:

Do note that the dual-camera on the back of the Essential is by no means similar to every other dual-cameras out there. The secondary main camera uses a monochrome-fusion system that captures much, much more light. The combination of the main cameras should produce an incredibly superior shot. The front camera is just as impressive, with an 8MP setup that is able to record videos in 4k.

With all the specs and other things aside, the real kicker for this phone is the entirely novel system of accessories and modules that comes or is coming with this phone. On the back of the Essential Phone is a magnetic connector in the form of two very small dots where you can snap additional modules, kind of like the Moto Mods with Moto Z phones but much smaller.

The highlighted module at the moment is the “smallest 360-degree camera in the world” where you can just snap it on the camera to use. Additionally, there is a specialised charging dock that can also be used with the module connector. Those are the only mods available for now, but you can almost bet that they will come up with more.

The phone is actually up for pre-order right now starting 30 May 2017 in the USA through their official website for a price of $700 (RM3000) with Black Moon, Stellar Gray, Pure White and Ocean depths colour options. The 360-degree camera is bundled with the phone right now for an additional $50 (RM220) if you pre-order.

So what do you think? Will it be able to compete with Samsung or Apple in Malaysia? The price is right up there with the big boys but it is reportedly unclear that the Essential Phone would be available outside of the USA but we are hoping it will launch in Malaysia in the near future so make sure you stay tuned to TechNave.com for any updates on this masterpiece of a phone.
