The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has revealed that a total of 128 GoPro Max 360 cameras will be used by its motorcycle enforcement unit during this festive period. The GoPro cameras will be used to detect offences committed by road users throughout the nation.

As reported by national news agency Bernama, these cameras would be used to detect traffic offenders, including:

  • Not wearing safety helmet or seat belt
  • Over-taking at double lines
  • Violating traffic lights
  • Using mobile phone while driving
  • Over-loading for commercial vehicles

JPJ director-general Datuk Zailani Hashim said that based on the recordings, the vehicle owners would be called for questioning before action is taken against them. Moreover, the motorcycle enforcement unit will conduct patrol in areas identified as ‘hotspots’.

The focus of the unit would be on 9 main offences that were identified as the main cause of fatal road accidents. Zailani further asserted that roadblocks will be mounted nationwide as the volume of vehicles increased, with monitoring being done by the aforementioned members equipped with GoPro cameras.
