A 32-year-old Japanese woman recently held a symbolic wedding ceremony with an AI partner she created using ChatGPT. So, what should you know about it?

It all started when she consulted ChatGPT for emotional support

For your information, the event took place in October 2025 in Okayama, Japan, and has sparked global discussion about how artificial intelligence is reshaping emotional connections and modern relationships. The woman, identified in reports as Kano, turned to ChatGPT earlier this year for emotional support after calling off her engagement with a human partner.

Over time, she began interacting with a custom AI persona that she personally designed and named Lune Klaus Verdure. What started as casual conversations gradually developed into a strong emotional bond, eventually leading to a proposal from the AI character, which she accepted.

The ceremony was not legally recognised under Japanese law and was intended to be purely symbolic. Still, it followed many familiar wedding traditions. Kano wore a wedding dress, had her makeup professionally done, and posed for wedding photographs. During the ceremony, she wore augmented reality smart glasses that displayed a life-sized image of Klaus standing beside her.

Because the AI persona did not have a physical voice, a wedding host read out vows generated by the AI. A ring exchange was also included, with careful positioning to allow the AI partner to be digitally added into photos later. According to organisers, the event blended real-world rituals with digital technology to reflect the nature of the relationship.

This unusual wedding highlights a broader trend, particularly in Japan, where some people are forming deep emotional attachments to virtual characters and AI companions. For Kano, the appeal was not about replacing human relationships entirely, but about feeling heard and understood during a vulnerable period in her life.

As AI tools like ChatGPT become more advanced and accessible, stories like this are raising questions about the future of relationships, emotional dependency, and how society defines love in a digital age.

What do you think about symbolic marriages with AI, and could this shape future relationships as technology continues to evolve?
