Remember Equanimity, the USD250 or ~RM1.09 billion luxury superyacht bought by Malaysian fugitive Jho Low allegedly using 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MBD)? Well, some 6 years after its seizure by the Malaysian authorities, it now has a new name and a new owner: Valve co-founder Gabe Newell!
According to a 2019 report by SCMP, the 91.5-metre superyacht was sold in April 2019 to a unit of the Genting Group for less than half the price. The company then renamed the yacht Tranquility and offered it for charter for USD1.25 million or ~RM5.47 million a week.
Well, the superyacht was back in the public eye recently after a 2023 article by Luxury Launches was shared on Reddit and went to the social site’s front page. In the article, it was revealed that Valve co-founder billionaire Gabe Newell, the wealthiest person in the video games industry thanks to Steam, owns an armada of luxury yachts worth around USD1 billion or ~RM4.38 billion.
And, as you can guess, Tranquility, aka Equanimity of Jho Low infamy, is revealed to be owned by Newell! Moreover, a more recent Luxury Launches article revealed that the billionaire still owns the superyacht and sent it for upgrading at Oceanco’s facilities in Zwijndrecht, Netherlands.
