K-KOMM to spend RM4 billion for fibre optic installation in over 4,000 Malaysian schools

The Communications and Multimedia Ministry (K-KOMM) has set aside RM4 billion in allocation so that over 4,000 schools in Malaysia will enjoy fibre optic connections. Announced by its minister, Tan Sri Annuar Musa yesterday, the amount involves the installation of Point of Presence (PoP) fibre optic network hubs in the schools.

Annuar further elaborated that the installation will be made in schools in the northern, central, southern and eastern zones in Peninsular Malaysia as well as in Sabah and Sarawak. It is hoped that the initiative would provide more stability and higher speed internet connection for the schools.

As reported by national news agency Bernama, the K-KOMM minister said that his ministry is targeting 500 to 600 fibre optics installation in each zone. Furthermore, the tender process will start soon and that the installation project will be implemented over a 36-month period.

Annuar also declared his ministry’s willingness to collaborate with the Rural Development Ministry to improve the quality of fibre optic network services in rural areas. He further stressed that it is most important for K-KOMM to provide internet network stability to all schools in rural areas, especially in areas that have not received quality services.
