The Minister of Communications and Digital (KKD), Fahmi Fadzil has revealed that a whopping 1.8 billion scam calls have been blocked by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) from 2017 to 2022. Furthermore, a total of 300 million scam messages via SMS were also blocked since 2018.

As reported by Bernama, the matter was informed to Fahmi during his meeting with the National Anti-Financial Crime Centre (NFCC) together with MCMC and several other parties. He further advised the public to be careful during this festive season as there will definitely be irresponsible scammers wanting to take advantage of the situation.

These include ‘cleaner scams’ on Facebook and various other types of scams that are not easy to deal with due to the ever-changing modus operandi of the scammers. Hence, Fahmi called upon Malaysians to always double-check offers for work or services before accepting them.

The KKD Minister also urged people who had fallen prey to scams to call the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997. The hotline can be used to make a report so that immediate action can be taken and to prevent you from losing money.
