Previously, we reported on Indonesia’s move to ban TikTok’s e-commerce platform, TikTok Shop in the country. Now, the same move may end up being enforced in Malaysia too, as the government has announced that it is studying whether something similar should be done here.

According to Bernama, the Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) revealed that the matter will be looked into before any measures are taken. Its Minister, Fahmi Fadzil asserted that he had received complaints from members of the public who expressed concern about a TikTok Shop ban.

Conversely, several large stores have also raised issues of price competition for products sold on the e-commerce platform. This is the same reason why TikTok Shop is banned in Indonesia, specifically, the platform’s predatory pricing threatening local entrepreneurs.

Fahmi elaborated that given how many Malaysians use TikTok Shop to sell goods, KKD and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will look into the basis of the action taken by the Indonesian government. He also believed that TikTok should come forward and give an explanation to the ministry.
