KKD: Malaysia may use satellites as cell towers to improve communication system

The Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) is currently studying the use of satellites as cell towers in an effort to improve the communications system in the country. Its Minister, Fahmi Fadzil said the technology can be implemented in cooperation with telco companies. 

The study is conducted through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), with KKD lauding that such a measure can help achieve the country’s “Where there’s a road, there’s internet” policy. Accoridng to Bernama, Fahmi further elaborated that in the next 2 or more years, there are several companies which are conducting research on the use of satellite technology as telecommunications towers.

Besides that, KKD also announced that telco companies have reached an agreement to help solve the problem of ‘naked’ towers in Sarawak. This involves 600 towers under the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA).
