Previously, we reported on Digital Nasional Bhd’s (DNB) statement that the 5G network coverage in Malaysia reached almost 50 per cent in 2022 and that it is on track for up to 80 per cent coverage in 2024. However, it looks like DNB may have jumped the gun or didn’t disclose its data or sources for the claim as the Communications and Digital Ministry (KKD) has today questioned the figure’s validity, revealing that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had not yet verified the information

According to Bernama, KKD Minister Fahmi Fadzil called on DNB to explain how it concluded that the implementation of 5G network coverage in our country had reached the claimed 50 per cent figure. He elaborated that MCMC had not yet verified the information and advised DNB not to publish anything prior to verification.

Fahmi made the statement in response to a tweet claiming that the numbers by DNB were bogus. In the statement on Monday (1 January 2023), DNB chief operating officer Nasution Mohamed claimed that 5G network coverage in Malaysia had reached 15 million Malaysians involving 3900 sites and will reach over 30 million people and businesses when fully implemented.
