The Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) has instructed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and telco companies to urgently establish standard operating procedures (SOP) for telecommunication access in disaster areas. Its Minister, Fahmi Fadzil made the directive while visiting the location of the landslide incident tragedy at the Fathers’ Organic Farm campsite in Gohtong Jaya yesterday.

As reported by Bernama, Fahmi revealed that he will be discussing with MCMC and mobile network providers to speed up the formulation of the SOP to help the search and rescue operations. Speaking to reporters last night, the KKD Minister said that the communication line at the disaster site was unsatisfactory.

He further asserted that the ministry may get cooperation from telcos to ensure that the problem of getting access to the internet or line does not occur, especially in disaster situations in the future. As an early measure to overcome the current problem in Gohtong Jaya, Telekom Malaysia (TM) and telcos have been instructed to send their Mobile Coverage Vehicles to allow the implementation of Coverage on Wheels at the location.

Accordingly, telecommunications equipment has since been delivered, including by TM, Celcom, Digi and UMobile. Maxis has also done (antenna) tilting to help reduce the issue which is mostly a technical and geographical problem. The KKD Minister will also be bringing up this matter at the Cabinet Meeting next Wednesday (21 December 2022).
