The Communications and Digital Ministry (KKD) has revealed that while the 5G coverage in Malaysia is now at 66.8%, only 4.2% of the population is using the network. Hence, the government is looking at ways to increase 5G usage among the populace, including partnering with Samsung for more affordable 5G devices.

In a Facebook post, KKD Minister Fahmi Fadzil revealed that the low 5G network usage was among the matters discussed during his visit to Samsung Headquarters in South Korea. Meeting with the tech giant’s Mobile Experience Business President TM Roh and Network Business President Woojune Kim, they discussed the potential of a collaboration for the benefit of Malaysians.

Fahmi added that among the reasons for low 5G network usage in our country include the prices of 5G smartphones that are not affordable. Speaking of which, the KKD Minister said that the recently launched 5G RAHMAH package that allows eligible Malaysians to purchase an RM949 Samsung smartphone for just RM240 is only a start.

He hoped that closer cooperation would continue to be forged between KKD and telcos with Samsung so that the price of 5G devices could be more affordable. Besides meeting with Samsung, Fahmi also witnessed the MoU signing ceremony between TM and SK Telecom, visited gaming companies NX3 Games and Smilegate, as well as delivered a speech at the GSMA Mobile 360 and Policy Leaders Forum 2023 while in South Korea.
