KLIA Aerotrain returns on 1 July 2025 - Automated transit resumes after over a year

Starting 1 July 2025 at 10:00 AM, passengers at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) can once again use the KLIA Aerotrain, which connects the Main Terminal to Satellite Terminal A.

The automated system, which has been out of service since March 2023, is set to resume operations after completing final safety tests. Each driverless train set can carry up to 270 passengers, helping to ease terminal transfers ahead of upcoming international events.

What is happening

Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed the Aerotrain’s relaunch during a media briefing, stating that critical system tests had been completed, including safety drills overseen by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD). While the automated system prepares for full operations, shuttle buses will continue running to ensure uninterrupted passenger movement.

The Aerotrain service is designed to improve efficiency at one of Malaysia’s busiest airports, especially with key ASEAN meetings planned for later this year and in preparation for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

The upgraded system consists of three-car train sets, with each car accommodating 90 passengers. During peak hours, two trains will operate simultaneously, while a single train will run from midnight to 5:00 AM during off-peak periods.

What does it means for Malaysia?

For Malaysian travellers, the Aerotrain is a vital part of KLIA’s infrastructure. Its return signals a step forward in restoring full digital and automated mobility solutions at major transport hubs.

Given Malaysia’s plans for tourism and international engagement, systems like the Aerotrain can improve airport efficiency and passenger confidence. Hopefully, this sets a trend for further tech-driven upgrades across Malaysia’s airports.
