With the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 on the horizon, cybersecurity firm Kaspersky is warning football fans to stay vigilant as scammers ramp up attacks ahead of the tournament. With global excitement building for the tournament, cybercriminals are exploiting the hype through fake websites, phishing emails, and fraudulent promotions designed to steal money and personal data.
Fake Ticket Sites
One of the most common scams involves fraudulent ticketing websites that pose as official platforms. These sites allow users to “purchase” match tickets using various currencies, complete with convincing registration and payment flows.
However, once transactions are completed, victims risk losing their money while also exposing sensitive information such as banking details and personal data. Some of these sites even mimic official tournament branding, including colour schemes, to appear legitimate and trustworthy.
Counterfeit Merchandise Stores

Scammers are also setting up fake online stores offering “official” World Cup merchandise, including mascot plush toys and apparel. These sites often promote heavy discounts to attract buyers and may display fake trust badges to appear credible. In reality, users who proceed with purchases may end up handing over personal and financial information to attackers, with no products ever delivered.
Phishing Emails and Fake Prize Claims
Beyond websites, Kaspersky reports a surge in phishing emails tied to the tournament. These emails often use urgent or enticing subject lines to trick users into clicking on malicious links or sending money. Some messages impersonate official organisations and reference fake legal or administrative notices, directing users to phishing pages. Others claim recipients have won large cash prizes, such as grants worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to cover travel and accommodation, in an attempt to lure victims into sharing details or making payments.
Security Solutions
To reduce the risk of falling victim, Kaspersky advises users to verify website authenticity before entering any personal information and to rely only on official or reputable platforms for tickets, streaming, or merchandise. Users are also encouraged to enable multi-factor authentication, monitor financial accounts for suspicious activity, and avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown sources.
Promotional Offer
In conjunction with the World Cup season, Kaspersky is offering promotional discounts of up to 19% on its Premium plans in Malaysia, along with additional incentives such as a complimentary RM30 Touch ’n Go reload PIN for customers who subscribe within the campaign period.
