The hard working folks at LG Innotek recently announced an under glass fingerprint sensor module by installing the sensor in a shallow furrow of 0.01 inches or 0.3mm on the lower backside of the cover glass. Tests with the module reveal that it is just as accurate (if not better) as existing exposed fingerprint sensors with a false acceptance rate of 0.002%. With this sensor embedded beneath the glass near the bezel, the sensor is better protected from water and shock while smartphone designers can create better designs like other capacitive keys.

While there are no Malaysia release dates on when we might see such devices or smartphones, LG Innotek expect demand for such sensors to increase exponentially. Further questions have revealed that while the under glass sensor could have applications in other industries, the company will focus on smartphones and other mobile devices for now. Here's what they had to say about the sensor:

"We are concentrating on all our resources to the development of the differentiated technology based on the creation of customer values. We will continue to provide convenient, safe, and pleasant user experiences by launching innovative product.” Changhwan Kim, Head of the company’s R&D Center
