LG completes 6G transmission test using Terahertz band

While the rest of the world is still trying to get 5G, some companies are already working on the future. LG has announced a milestone in its 6G research yesterday. Specifically, the Korean tech and electronics company has completed a 6G transmission test.

According to the announcement, the 6G transmission test was conducted on 13 August 2021 in Germany. LG had the help of Europe's largest applied research lab, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, to transmit data between the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) and the Berlin Institute of Technology. The test was conducted over a 100-metre distance.

The transmission used a 6G Terahertz (THz) band, which has a short-range and experiences power loss during the transmission. To overcome that weakness, a power amplifier was developed by LG, Fraunhofer HHI, and Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (IAF) to generate a stable signal output. The test also made use of adaptive beamforming and high-gain antenna switching technologies.

Of course, 6G is clearly not something for the near future. Hopefully, Malaysian telcos will be motivated to make widespread 5G a reality in Malaysia. One can only hope, right? For more news like this, stay tuned to TechNave.
