The Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) Shah Alam Line project, currently valued at RM21.93?billion, is over 99?percent complete as of 10 July 2025. The line is set to begin operations on 30 September 2025, connecting Bandar Utama in Petaling Jaya to Johan Setia in Klang.
Project status
Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed that the LRT3 project has reached 99.21?percent completion. The final stages of testing and safety certification are ongoing, with the launch date on track for the end of September.
The project experienced delays due to the Movement Control Order implemented between March 2020 and October 2021, followed by labour and material shortages that impacted progress.
Despite these setbacks, the Ministry of Transport has maintained its commitment to delivering the line within a revised timeline.
Originally approved at RM31.65?billion in 2015, the project cost was reduced to RM16.63?billion in 2018 after a major restructuring.
In 2024, the government approved an additional RM5.3?billion to reinstate several key components, including five previously shelved stations, seven additional three-car train sets, a larger depot in Johan Setia, 150 electric feeder buses, and three new bus depots.
This brought the total to RM21.93?billion, still RM9.72?billion less than the original allocation.
What we could expect
Once operational, the LRT3 is expected to serve up to 18,630 passengers per hour per direction, providing improved public transport access to approximately two million residents across Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, and Klang.
The project aims to reduce traffic congestion, support regional development, and encourage a shift towards public transportation.
Our thoughts
The LRT3’s progress highlights Malaysia’s focus on sustainable urban mobility. By balancing cost controls with restored infrastructure features, the government appears to be taking a long-term approach to commuter convenience and last-mile connectivity.
Though not a tech gadget, the project aligns with smart city principles by improving public transport efficiency and integration.
As the LRT3 line prepares for its upcoming launch, more details such as fare structures and feeder service schedules are expected to be announced soon.
