Lazada survey reveals Raya trends 2016

It’s that time of the year again when family and friends gather to celebrate Hari Raya AidilFitri! With the festive season less than half a month away, a recent survey by Lazada Malaysia, the leading online marketplace in Malaysia, revealed Malaysians online shopping and searching habits during the month of Ramadhan.

Themed as the ‘Riang Ria Raya Survey’, latest data revealed that the top searches online during Ramadhan include home makeover, food recipes, Malay fashion and weight loss. There has been an increase of more than 10% of customers shopping online so far this Ramadhan and an overwhelming majority (83%) of them from the rural areas, further underlining the sustained growth of online shoppers in areas outside of the country’s major urban centres.

It is revealed that customers are getting more in trend as top searches on Google discovered that most of them are looking for Baju Raya moden. The survey also indicates that 90% of online shoppers spend mostly on Raya clothing, as many of them are looking to celebrate the festive season in style. Besides that, new curtains are a top item, as 40% of the shoppers surveyed bought that, as more people look towards decorating their house ahead of the festive season.

Another interesting fact that Lazada has garnered is that close to 50% of the online shoppers start their shopping one to two weeks before Raya, with orders made between 12 midnight to 6am on mobile devices. This showed that shoppers opt to do their last minute Raya shopping at the end of the day when they have the free time to do so and online marketplaces are ultimately the preferred solution.

Three-quarter of the shoppers that shop between 12 midnight to 6am is Gen Y, which is commonly defined as those born between the 1980s to the early 2000s. More than 60% of these shoppers buy using their tablets and smartphones. The top items bought during this “night owl shopping” stretch include ‘Shake N Take Blender’ (ie. hand blenders), power banks and electronic kitchen scales.
