Leaked images show TCL device with extendable display

Foldable devices are the hot stuff this year but TCL has something else in mind. Reports with leaked images of a new smartphone by TCL shows a device with an extendable screen. It's still a form of foldable display, just not the type we've come to expect.

TCL has been working on this slide-out style smartphone and was ready to showcase it at this year's Mobile World Congress. However, due to the tradeshow being cancelled, we won't be seeing any hands-on of the prototype that supposedly works. Thankfully, the good folks at CNET were able to grab the leaked images for people to see.

How this prototype is supposed to work is unknown so far. From the images, it seems that the display is meant to extend gradually as you slide the phone; the extra portion of the screen has to be kept somewhere when not extended. Currently, it's suggested that a portion of the display wraps behind the other when it's closed.

You're probably wondering how badly this would crease, or if it would even work properly. We don't have an answer to that, but isn't it exciting to see something like this and hope TCL can make it a reality?
