FIFA announced a strategic partnership with Lenovo as the official technology partner for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. As a reminder, next year's World Cup will be held in North America - specifically in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

High-tech World Cup

As per the signed agreement, Lenovo will provide the hardware and tech support to run the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This includes ThinkPad laptops, Motorola devices, servers, storage systems, and AI-based data centre solutions. Lenovo will also support technical operations at the stadiums throughout the tournament. This refers to the broadcasting, media centre, VAR system, and real-time data management.

Tech required for coordination

So, why all the fancy tech? A large part of this is due to the tournament having three host countries. For your info, next year's World Cup will feature 104 matches played across 16 cities. This means there's a much greater need for operational efficiency than in previous World Cups. FIFA named Lenovo its key partner this time, as the latter has the expertise and technologies to deliver an end-to-end ecosystem, ensuring the highest levels of system performance and reliability for the tournament.

In addition to strengthening technical aspects, Lenovo will introduce AI solutions to enhance the spectators' experience. These AI solutions include real-time statistical analysis, interactive data displays, and intelligent logistics control in the stadium. Teams and coaches will also receive special tablets with live tactical data and player performance to help them make tactical decisions.

FIFA and Lenovo are expected to detail their AI technology at the Lenovo Tech World event. The event will be held in Las Vegas in January 2026, ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which starts from 11 June 2026. With that said, what do you think of a high-tech World Cup?
