The FIFA World Cup ended with team Argentina bringing home the iconic solid gold trophy. However, the joy of seeing their favourite team win is still not over with Instagram users, as many tapped twice on Lionel Messi's picture of him holding the trophy, making it the most-liked post in Instagram's history.

The football star had posted quite a few pictures of him getting affectionate with the World Cup trophy, but the first one garnered 58.2 million likes on the social media platform (at the time of writing). With the number of likes, the post surpassed the record held by a picture of an egg uploaded by Chris Godfrey, having 56.3 million likes (also at the time of writing).

'Thank you very much to my family, to all who support me and also to all who believed in us. We demonstrate once again that Argentines when we fight together and united we are capable of achieving what we set out to do. The merit belongs to this group, which is above individualities, it is the strength of all fighting for the same dream that was also the dream of all Argentines... We did it!!!"
