Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook has announced that the Ministry of Transport (MOT) views seriously the incident of an 18-year-old teenager electrocuted to death onboard an express bus at Penang Sentral in Butterworth, Penang. Accordingly, several immediate actions have been taken, including the activation of a Special Taskforce to investigate the incident.
According to Harian Metro, the victim, 18-year-old Mohamad Nur Asymawi, was charging his smartphone at around 7.40pm on 1 November using a socket on the bus when he was electrocuted. In a Facebook post, Loke revealed that he has instructed the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) to immediately suspend the operation of the express bus.
Moreover, he asserted that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) will immediately conduct investigations into the incident. A Special Taskforce consisting of JPJ, APAD and the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) has also been activated to investigate the cause of the incident.
The Transport Minister stressed that his side will ensure that such an incident won’t happen again and that the safety of passengers is always safeguarded. He also offered condolences to the family of the victim over the tragic incident.
