BMW Malaysia has just introduced Apple’s CarPlay for their models. The first 6 months is free (from the time the car is assembled) and after that, users will be charged a fee. For the first 3 months, users will be charged RM5 if they’re not willing to commit just yet. CarPlay comes with a 12-month plan which costs RM513 and a 36-month plan at RM799. If you want unlimited access forever, it will set users back RM1899.
If you’re lost, Apple CarPlay is a car radio with an iOS interface. Users just need to plug in their iPhone and authorize the device using the passcode or thumbprint. It allows the integration of calls, texts, music, maps and Siri with your car radio basically. This prevents distracted driving.
So on top of paying for your expensive car, you now have to pay for your entertainment system. Nice. From what’s been heard, the decision for CarPlay to charge fees came from Apple with BMW gaining nothing from it. Other than Malaysia, the subscription service is also happening in the US, Australia and the UK. However, the service is free to use on other car models supporting the service such as Audi, Toyota, Volkswagen, Ferrari, Ford, Honda, Mazda and more. At the time of writing, it just makes me realise how I probably will never be able to afford CarPlay because I’ll never be able to use it because I’ll never be able to afford these cars (#thebrokelife).
