The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has revealed that it has been receiving an increasing amount of complaints from the public regarding telecommunication services in our country. Its chairman, Datuk Dr Fadhlullah Suhaimi Abdul Malek said that just last month, the commission received over 4000 complaints.
He also claimed that the recent resurgence of complaints is due to the change in the way consumers use telco services. Fadhlullah further elaborated that most of the complaints received nowadays are regarding the quality of service offerd by telco companies rather than related to internet coverage.
As reported by national news agency Bernama, the MCMC chairman also associated the rise in complaints due to the way people use internet. In the past, users might only need 1 Mbps, but due to the flurry of applications on their smartphones, high-speed mobile internet is important.
Fadhlullah further said that while the number of complaints now are high, it was much higher during the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO). During that time, MCMC received about 30000 complaints related to telco services.
However, the complaints decreased significantly when the federal government implemented the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA) as well as when Covid-19 SOPs become more relaxed. Hence, to ensure consumers get satisfactory telco services, MCMC is setting periodic quality level for internet speed based on the average current needs of users.
