The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is looking into legal action against platform X following the failure of Grok's artificial intelligence (AI) to comply with Malaysian laws relating to online safety. So, what should you know about it?
X is not taking this seriously
According to Bernama, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the move was considered after the feedback received by MCMC from party X was found to be inadequate and pro forma (merely in accordance with the procedures in place).
"So after I received the report from MCMC, I have ordered that a temporary ban be imposed on Grok and legal action be considered," he said.
Moreover, Fahmi explained that the restrictions did not involve the entire X platform, but rather focused on the Grok application, which was found to not have sufficient security measures to control content generation by AI. The duration of Grok's ban depends entirely on the level of compliance of party X with national laws.
Additionally, Malaysia is not the only country to take strict action against Grok. Indonesia has also blocked the app, while the United Kingdom is looking into the same issue. Three US senators have also urged Apple and Google to remove X and Grok from their app stores.
