Aside from paid subscription service like Astro or Netflix, technology like Android TV boxes provides us with access to TV shows and movies we don't normally have. But the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has warned that these Android Boxes are misusing the SIRIM and MCMC labels.
The MCMC has issued an official statement on Facebook, confirming that while these Android TV boxes are indeed certified by SIRIM and come with the MCMC label. However, the certification and label only represent the approval of the product's compliance with MCMC's WiFi and Bluetooth model standards. In other words, the labels don't provide blanket approval of all applications and content streamed by these Android boxes.
If an app in an Android TV box provides streaming to services that are copyrighted, then it is illegal and MCMC can take action. The MCMC has advised that users download the app called Check Your Label from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, which you can then use to check the labels of any product to see what's approved or not. You can also find more details about the app here.
