MKN says the viral personal data leakage incident is a hoax

The National Security Council (MKN) has clarified that the personal data currently circulating on social media is not a new leak but rather old data from an incident before 2022. This statement was issued in response to allegations that there was a leak involving the current platform. Here’s everything you need to know.

According to the MKN, the dissemination of the information is believed to be the result of a previous system intrusion that was carried out illegally and is now being re-distributed without permission. Following this, the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) stressed that disseminating or providing access to data obtained through illegal means is an offence under Malaysian law, even if the site or service operates overseas.

More websites that spread rumours or false news will be blocked

As an immediate measure, NACSA, together with MyNIC and the Personal Data Protection Department (JPDP) have collaborated with overseas service providers to take down and block websites that disseminate the data. This step was taken to ensure that the people's cybersecurity continues to be maintained and personal information is not misused.

At the same time, MKN advises the public not to use or access leaked data, as such actions not only contribute to the spread of cybercrime but also violate national laws. The incident also highlights the need to strengthen the cybersecurity legal framework, including through the Cyber Crime Bill that will be tabled in Parliament to increase protection against increasingly complex digital threats.

Never hurts to be safe

Personally, we would advise everyone in Malaysia to always switch on their 2FA security measures. After all, you can never be too careful these days. What are your thoughts on the news? Feel free to leave your comments below.
