Translation software has improved over the years but the one on the Facebook platform still seems to have some issues. During a visit to Myanmar recently, Chinese President Xi Jinping’s was mistranslated as "Mr Sh**hole" on Facebook. The company has explained that this is due to a technical error in the translation.
The Chinese President was in the country to sign agreements linking China to Myanmar via the Belt and Road project, according to Reuters. That was when people discovered the mistranslation on Myanmar state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi's Facebook page. Facebook has since come out to apologise for the error, explaining that it was due to bad translation from Burmese to English.
The reason for the error is because Xi Jinping’s name is not in the Facebook Burmese database, so a translation was given instead of his name appearing as is. While this may be hilarious to some, it shows that Facebook's translation software for the Burmese language has some ways to go.
