Malaysia’s communications regulator has blocked access to the websites of two international dating platforms, Grindr and Blued, as authorities step up efforts to enforce domestic digital content laws. The action was confirmed in Parliament by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has already restricted access to the sites while evaluating next steps.
Legal Options for App Stores Under Review
While the websites are now inaccessible locally, the mobile versions of the apps remain available on major download platforms like Google Play and Apple App Store because those decisions fall under the control of the platform providers themselves. The Communications Ministry told lawmakers that no formal requests to remove Grindr or Blued from those app stores have yet been submitted to MCMC.
To address this, officials said MCMC is studying possible legal and regulatory options to curb the availability of such apps in Malaysia, including engaging with app store operators to explore measures that could restrict downloads if they violate local laws.
Enforcement Focus Based on Content Standards
The ministry reiterated that MCMC’s mandate is to act against online content or app functionality that violates domestic law. This includes content considered obscene, immoral, exploitative, abusive, fraudulent, or harmful to public safety under current legislation. If an application is found to facilitate prohibited activities or distribute illegal content, authorities said they could pursue requests for removal, access restrictions, or refer cases to enforcement agencies, including the police.
Communications Minister Fahmi framed the regulator’s actions as part of proactive monitoring to maintain a legal and safe online space. However, he noted that the complexity of taking action against apps owned by foreign companies means that any measures involving app stores will require careful legal consideration.
Discussion in Parliament Reflects Broader Debate
The response makes clear that while MCMC has taken steps at the website level, any restrictions on mobile app availability remain under review. Until then, stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
