Today, Snap Inc., the makers of Snapchat has released a new global study that compromise of 10,000 people from several countries, including Malaysia, on how culture, age, and technology have shaped our preferences and attitudes around friendship. That said, it turns out that Malaysia is one of the friendliest people in the world.

According to the Friendship Report, the company discovered that Malaysians really love to add friends, as we have twice as many best friends (5.8) and close friends (8.4) as those in Europe, Australia and America (the global average is just 4.3 and 7.2 respectively). Also, 27% of Malaysians seem to have a need to diversify their social circle in terms of age, gender, race, and sexuality, compared with 19% globally.

Moving on, it’s a new discovery that 37% of Gen Z people are more selective on choosing who can enter their close circle of friends. Gen Z Malaysians (27%) are also seem more reluctant than Gen Y (56%) to share personal life updates publicly on Facebook. That said, 70% of Malaysians say that the media (photos and videos) help them to express what they want to say as opposed to writing. It doesn’t take a rocker scientist to figure this out, but we (37-40%) also rely on technology to form friendships as well.

Finally, interaction with friends in real life and online surprisingly share a close result of 57% vs 52%. So in other words, doesn’t matter which platform we use, as long as we get to keep in touch and long term studies have reported that our life span will decrease by 20% if we have no close friends (I wonder how did they count to that percentage lol).

Well, those are some interesting findings by Snap Inc. What do you think? Do the scores really reflect on what we experience? Let’s discuss on the Facebook post and stay tuned for more tech lifestyle news at TechNave.com.
