It's been a while since we got some updates on the dual 5G network news but in early June, it was reported that the telcos were ready to sign a dual-network 5G share subscription agreement with DNB. This time, our local Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced that it's ready to roll out.
According to Fahmi, the dual-network 5G model between the local telcos and DNB will complete the equity holding process on June 21 2024. After the completion, he also mentioned that identifying the telco that will develop the second 5G network will begin and the process will only be open to those who signed the equity.
In case you missed it, the second 5G network policy was to drive competition and ensure the sustainability of the telco ecosystem in Malaysia. Therefore, the dual-network 5G model is purely commercial and it will focus on efforts to strengthen the relationship between the two ministries.
Meanwhile, Fahmi also mentioned other matters in his Facebook post yesterday. This includes a “direct-to-cell” technology involving a low-Earth orbital satellite (LEO) that may be able to help solve internet problems in remote areas, as well as areas without internet connection. Fahmi was also meeting TYT Jin Zhuanglong, Minister of Industry and Information Technology of China to discuss telecommunication issues.
