Malaysia will begin testing a new immigration system that will allow Malaysians and selected visitors to cross borders without using a physical passport, starting from September 22, 2025, to February 28, 2026. So, what should you know about it?
A new system coming soon?
For your information, this system is known as NIISe (National Integrated Immigration System), with identity verification done through scanning a QR code in the MyNIISe application.
The trial will be conducted at the Johor Causeway and the Second Line before being expanded to five major airports, including KLIA Terminal 1, KLIA Terminal 2, Bayan Lepas, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.
Additionally, the NIISe QR code has an interesting feature that allows a group of tourists to enter with just one scan, compared to MyBorderPass, which requires each individual to have a personal QR code.
MyNIISe will also be used on the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link when it opens.
But that is not all
Moreover, the security system used is facial recognition and artificial intelligence (AI). The initiative aims to reduce congestion and speed up the immigration process at the country's busiest border.
Singapore has allowed entry into the country using QR code scans since December 2024 through the MyICA app. With this standardisation, it opens up a future of entry and exit between these two neighbouring countries without any physical passports, completely to before 1965.
The MyNIISe application can now be downloaded from the Apple App Store, Google Play Store and Huawei App Gallery.
